Admission

The Upperclass James Scholar Program is open to all students who achieve a minimum cumulative University of Illinois GPA of 3.30. (Electrical or Computer Engineering majors require a 3.50 GPA.) Each individual department may require a higher GPA. After development and approval at the department level (see below), honors contracts will be submitted to the Associate Dean for Academic Programs of the College of Engineering for final approval. In addition to listing a set of academic activities designed to satisfy the requirements of the Upperclass James Scholar Program, honors contracts will state the overall purpose of the student's proposed honors program and describe the manner in which the planned activities support that purpose.

Students may apply for later admission to the Upperclass James Scholar Program if they meet the requirements for admission to the program and can design an honors contract that can be completed and will enable them to fulfill the graduation requirements of the program during the remaining period of their undergraduate study at UIUC. Students whose cumulative GPA drops below a 3.30 (3.5 for ECE majors) at the end of an academic year will be dropped from the program. If a student is dropped from the program and later achieves a cumulative GPA of 3.30 or above, the student will be readmitted to the program without prejudice, subject to the regular requirements of the program. Transfer students may apply after at least one semester if their U of I GPA meets the requirements.

Applications for admission are available in 206 Engineering Hall and will be accepted during the first two weeks of each semester and during the summer.
