Welcome to the New Engineering James Scholars Website

Requirements

Each year that a student actively participates in the program, certification for that academic year appears on the transcript. The following are guidelines for achieving annual certification:

  • Freshmen honors students must take at least one honors course per year (sections identified in the class schedule with an "H" at the end of the section designation) or complete an Honors Credit Learning Agreement.
  • Sophomores must: (1) complete the design of their honors contract; and (2) take one honors course per year, or complete an Honors Credit Learning Agreement, or complete at least one course in their honors contract.
  • Juniors and seniors must take at least one course per year from their honors contract.
  • If the honors contract is not completed upon graduation all previous certification for the uper class James Scholar program will be removed.

Recognition Upon Graduation

If, upon graduation, the student has satisfied honors degree requirements and is in the honors program at graduation, he or she will be graduated as a James Scholar, and this will be designated on the student’s record. A certificate will also be issued by the College of Engineering certifying the recognition.

Special Requirements for Electrical or Computer Engineering Majors

The ECE department requires a 3.5 GPA rather than a 3.3 GPA and juniors and seniors must take ECE 200 in either the fall or spring semester of each year. Details are at www.ece.uiuc.edu/ugrad/james.html.

Special Requirements for Computer Science Majors

To complete an honors contract in Computer Science, a student must complete one of three following options:

  1. Complete two additional 400-level CS courses beyond those already required in the CS curriculum, and either complete a senior thesis (CS 499 - old course CS 299) or a senior project (CS 492 - old course CS 292 and CS 493 - old course CS 293) or the software engineering sequence (CS 427 - old course CS 327 and CS 428 - old course CS 329)
  2. Add two additional courses to your Application Sequence, which must be at the upper undergraduate level
  3. Complete a minor, with approval of the honors advisor. Most, but not all, minors are acceptable. (For example, a minor in Math would not constitute a satisfactory honors agreement, because using option 2 - an application sequence in Math, extended by two additional courses - would involve considerably more courses than the Math minor.)

Other Things You Should Know

  • Sophomores and juniors who are not in the honors program must complete the design of their honors contract in order to be admitted.
  • Satisfaction of minimum cumulative GPA requirements (normally 3.3) will be reviewed after each academic year. Students not meeting the requirement will be dropped from the program. Students may apply for readmission if the cumulative GPA is raised above the minimum.
  • Library stacks passes may be picked up at the Circulation desk of the main University Library, Rm. 203.
  • Requests for admission to the program will be considered only during the summer and the first two weeks of each semester.
